Gothic Cross
Goth is not a religious, political, racial, sexual nor occult movement!! Goth embraces all religions, all denominations and all races. The subculture is marked by its emphasis on individualism, tolerance for diversity, a strong emphasis on creativity, tendency toward intellectualism, a dislike of social conservatism, and a mild tendency towards cynicism.
There are Goths that are atheists, new age spiritualists, Wiccans and members of other alternative religious groups. There are Christian Goths. Basically Goth is not about religion, but it uses the imagery of religions as you might come to see Goths wearing crosses or ankhs or pentacles, and there are many religious references in Goth songs, but this does not make it a religious movement.
The number of Pagans is noticeably higher amongst Goths than other similar social groups, this is probably due to the cynicism over organised religions. Goths tend not to want to worship a religion which often treats gothdom as ‘evil’. Paganism should not be confused with Satanism, although the Pentacle and Pentagram are identical in appearance. Pagans believe in the balance, power and beauty of nature, and do not have fixed notions of “good” and “evil”. Many Pagans also practice “magic”, which links them to the Wiccan religion, however in the same way not all Goths are Pagans, not all Pagans are Wiccan. The band Inkubus Sukkubus are particularly pro-Wiccan.
The majority of goth bands are either non-religious or actively anti- religious. Religious imagery, particularly that of Christian Catholic (crucifixes), Ancient Egyptian (Ankhs) and Pagan (Pentacles) is popular, as it conveys the “darkly powerful” feeling associated with Goth music.
There are few genuinely Satanist goths. It is important to realise however that Satanism has nothing to do with sacrifices or ritual abuse, this is merely a media image. Satanism is no more or less evil than other beliefs.
Further reading will be provided in future.
I will be posting information on Paganism, Wicca and Satanism on my official website with a few articles to come here later.
There is no common religious tie that binds together the Goth movement, but spiritual, supernatural and religious imagery has played a major part in gothic fashion, song lyrics and visual art.
Now what I find particularly disgusting in St Lucia is that young kids have picked up “goth” (what their small minds think it is) as a fad and decided that parading around in black, tattooing 666 on their arm and wearing a bunch of spikes makes them Goth. Funny how they cannot name one Gothic Band, have never even read one Gothic Novel and can give you no real info pertaining to why they are goth in the first place! YOU are the ones giving REAL Goths a bad name and spreading the ridiculous notion that Goths are “satanic devil worshippers”. Goths do not dress up to please anyone, this is their skin. If you dress up this way to fight against society consider the punk lifestyle as this group are the biggest non- conformists ever.
